Smiling My Life Away
Background
- Several of the band, Matt and Rob in particular, did/do more than their share of smiling and nodding
- A lot of the time, it's helpful
- Other times, less so
- Smiling appeared to be seen as virtuous a lot of the time but was paradoxically quite a bad idea, a lot of the time
- but still the smiler smiles
- The song was a bit of an argument against grinning and bearing it, whatever "it" happened to be at the time
- Some young women the band were familiar with, back when this was being written, criticised the pent up aggression and venom that resulted from bottling things up and smiling at people who were winding you up
- To have described these women as "in the way" was consciously ignorant/ironic and supposed to convey a bit of a sexual connotation
- Sex, with affectionate and caring young women, has a tendency to relax a chap, a lot of the time
Lyrics
A day like today and I know
I know the reasons why
All the people around me seem so
Seem so fit to die
Get out of my way
I’m coming for you today
Get out of my way
I’m coming for you in a nice way
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away Yay Hey
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away Yay Hey
Smiling My Life Away
The girl in the way says I know
I’m gonna get you today
We’re gonna have to presume tomorrow
Is gonna come anyway
Get out of my way
I’m coming for you today
Get out of my way
I’m coming for you in a nice way
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away Yay Hey
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away Yay Hey
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away Yay Hey
Smiling My Life Awaaaaay
Smiling My Life Away
Smiling My Life Away Yay Hey
Smiling My Life Away
Smile!
